General David Petraeus talks about implementing the successful "Surge" strategy in Iraq, and some of the unique complexities he encountered when translating that plan to the war in Afghanistan.  He discusses the fundamentals of counterinsurgency, his personal disdain for yes men, the paradox of nation building, and how a grad school dissertation on the Vietnam War helped shape his world view.  Plus General Petraeus weighs in on President Trump and the return of large geopolitical rivalries.  Today's episode was sponsored by LinkedIn Jobs and The Art of Charm podcast.

For the life of me, I wonder why you would extol General Petraus, as a man of integrity, and impeccable judgement! He gave away top secret information, to his mistress. He was charged with a crime! He was a weak man, who could never be trusted to keep important, secret information about our military.
Why did you allow him to go on and on about his “accomplishments,” without asking about this? Which by the way was a disgraceful slap on the hand. There have been others, who did much less, who were harshly punished.
“On November 9, 2012, Petraeus resigned as Director of the CIA after admitting having a sexual relationship with his biographer. On April 23, 2015, Petraeus pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of mishandling classified materials. He was given a two-year probationary period and a fine of $100,000.
