Theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss (A Universe from Nothing) is at the forefront of the quest to discover the origins of the universe and human existence. He says human beings need to get past our need to believe that we’re “the center of the universe” and to start focusing on how we’re here instead of why we’re here.  Today he talks about that and his new book The Greatest Story Ever Told--So Far: Why Are We Here?  He gives a sweeping narrative of the history of science, which he says is far more compelling than bible parables, and he discusses some of the great physicists who make up part of that story.  He extols the virtue of science for science sake and not just for developing new consumer gadgets.  In the process, he takes on education in America, President Donald Trump, so-called “intelligent design,” and Deepak Chopra.  Plus he reveals why The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (which he chairs) just moved the infamous “doomsday clock” a lot closer to midnight.

Tom Nichols is a professor of National Security Affairs at the U.S. Naval War College, an adjunct professor in the Harvard Extension School, and a 5 time Jeopardy! champion. He’s a respected expert on national security, Russia, and nuclear proliferation, and he’s alarmed by Americans sudden rebuke of experts like himself, and the elevation of ignorance to some sort of virtue. He writes about it in a new book called The Death of Expertise: The Campaign Against Established Knowledge and Why it Matters.

Today he discusses how colleges are fostering a society in which everyone’s opinion is treated as fact and how the internet is turning Americans into a bunch of ignorant “know-it-alls.” He talks about how fact checking sites like Snopes are fighting a losing battle against the tide of disinformation on the internet, he spells out how experts share part of the responsibility for the rebellion against knowledge, he talks about Donald Trump's professed "love" of "uneducated people," and how the embrace of ignorance could lead to an erosion of democracy in America. Plus, how to consume a balanced diet of news every day, and how to win at Jeopardy!

Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker Evgeny Afineevsky (Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom) returns to the podcast to talk about his new HBO documentary Cries from Syria. Evegny details how Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad helped fuel radical groups like ISIS to force the Free Syrian Army to fight a war on two fronts and misdirect media attention toward ISIS instead of Assad’s own crimes. He shares evidence that Assad continues to use chemical weapons on his own people and bombs civilian neighborhoods, hospitals and schools in a deliberate campaign of terror. He tells some of the heartbreaking stories of the thousands of children who have become the innocent victims of the Syrian War and he debunks Vladimir Putin’s claim that Russia is helping to fight ISIS in Syria. Plus Evgeny’s thoughts on the murky Trump-Putin relationship.

Legendary Republican political strategist Roger J. Stone, Jr. has been called “the lord of mischief,” “the master of rightwing political hit-jobs,” and “the most dangerous man in America.”  Stone and his political trickery played an integral role in the elections of Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush, as well as George W. Bush’s victory during the 2000 Florida recount. He was also instrumental in the 2016 win of his friend of 40 years Donald Trump. He writes about it in his new book The Making of the President 2016: How Donald Trump Orchestrated a Revolution.

Today Roger Stone recounts his crash course in underhandedness on the Nixon campaign, his first introduction to Donald Trump through mob-attorney Roy Cohn, and the moment years ago when he knew Trump was serious about running for President. He also addresses allegations that he was involved in the Russian email hacks that brought down Hillary Clinton and he accuses someone in the “deep state” of poisoning him in an attempt to silence Roger Stone once and for all. Conservative author and radio host Hugh Hewitt has what he has described as an “unusual relationship” with President Donald Trump. He interviewed Trump 15 times during the 2016 election and was a panelist on 4 of the Presidential debates, and now Hugh Hewitt draws his personal experience with the President and his service for two previous Republican Presidents in a new book called The Fourth Way: The Conservative Playbook for a Lasting GOP Majority.

Today, he comes on the show to share what the “4th Way” is as well as his suggestions for President Trump’s proposed infrastructure program and why he says Trump should approach immigration the way Nixon approached China. He’ll discuss why he opposes overhauling the tax code and why he’s for Trump’s plan for a 350 ship navy. Hugh Hewitt also explains why Trump must implement the “4th Way” quickly, or he could risk losing the GOP majority in Congress and perhaps even impeachment.

Then I talk with the executive producers and creators of Z: The Beginning of Everything Nicole Yorkin and Dawn Prestwich. They talk about what attracted them to Zelda’s POV, they weigh in on whether F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “borrowing” of his wife’s words amounts to plagiarism, and whether Zelda’s husband may have contributed to her steady descent into madness. In one of his first actions as President, Donald Trump signed an Executive Order that put the final death nail in the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (T.P.P.) this week.  My guests today will discuss what was in the T.P.P., what the U.S. will be missing out on by backing out of the T.P.P., and why Trump's decision just opened a window for China to become the dominant player in the Pacific Rim.

I'll talk with the outgoing U.S. Trade Ambassador Michael Froman who negotiated the Trans-Pacific Partnership on behalf of the U.S., and then I'll talk with two leading economists who both served as the Chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors. Prof. Austan Goolsbee, served as Chairman of the C.E.A. under President Barack Obama, and Prof. Martin Felstein held that position under President Ronald Reagan, but they BOTH agree that free trade is a net win for the U.S. and the demise of the T.P.P. is a terrible loss opportunity for America.

When the brutal Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was captured in 2003, senior CIA leadership analyst John Nixon was called in to confirm his identity and became the first person to conduct a prolonged interrogation of the man known as the “Butcher of Bagdad.”  He talks about it in his new book Debriefing the President: The Interrogation of Saddam Hussein.

Today Nixon recalls the surreal experience of debriefing one of the most notorious men of our time.  He’ll discuss Saddam’s sadistic sense of humor, his personal heroes, and how his opinion of his fellow leaders in the Middle East.  He’ll talk about Saddam’s delusional view of the US-Iraq relationship, why he thought 9/11 should’ve brought the two countries closer, and his almost prophetic warnings about the rise of extremism and chaos in the region.  Nixon will also reveal what President George W. Today I talk with comedian Louie Anderson, who won an Emmy for his role as "Christine" on BASKETS, and Martha Kelly, who plays the brilliantly deadpan "Martha" on BASKETS.  Louie talks about starting out as a joke writer for the king of the one liners - Henny Youngman, coming up as a young comedian in the heyday of the legendary Comedy Store, and getting his big break on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, plus Louie reveals which of his family members inspired his chactacter "Christine" on BASKETS.

Martha Kelly talks about coming up in the Austin comedy scene, and how her  BASKETS co-star Zach Galifianakis and Jonathan Krisel convinced her to take the role of "Martha."  Then BASKETS show-runner, executive producer, and director Jonathan Krisel talks about why he often prefers to work with non-actors, how the show got past the audience's preconceived expectations, and what it's like working with his co-creators Zach Galifianakis and Louis C.K. on BASKETS and his co-creators Fred Armisen and Carry Brownstein on his other show Portlandia

Season 2 of BASKETS premieres tonight at 10/9C on FX.  For more information including bonus content, behind the scenes footage and cast and crew interviews, visit www.FXNetworks.com.  Follow Louie Anderson at Louie Anderson at www.LouieAnderson.com or on Twitter at @LouieAnderson.  If you want to see Louie perform live, check his upcoming tour dates.  Follow Martha Kelly on Twitter at @MarthaKelly3 or at www.MarthaKelly.net.
