Jason Zinoman, the comedy critic New York Times, talks about his new book Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night.  Jason discusses how Letterman created something totally different that parodied talk shows and rewrote the conventions of comedy and he talks about the many ways that Letterman’s legacy can be seen on every late night show on television today. We’ll get into the legendary “late night wars” between Leno and Letterman, what made Letterman a far superior interviewer to Carson or Jay Leno, his amazing ability as an ad-libber, and his subtle and not so subtle digs at the phoniness of celebrity. Plus, stupid pet tricks, top 10 lists, and Jason’s surprisingly candid interview with David Letterman himself.

Order Letterman: The Last Giant of Late Night on Amazon.  Read Jason Zinoman's column in the New York Times and follow him on Twitter at @Zinoman.

“The man of 1000 voices” celebrity impersonator Rich Little talks about his 50 years in showbiz and his memoir Little by Little: People I’ve Known and Been. He discusses the time he stood in for Ronald Reagan at a White House press conference, the time Jack Benny led him on a ridiculous quest for the perfect chicken noodle soup, an embarrassing cocktail party at Richard Nixon’s house, and how a trip to the San Diego Zoo helped him perfect his Johnny Carson impersonation. He says Ed Sullivan was dumb as a rock, Cary Grant was surprisingly insecure, and Jimmy Stewart avoided signing autographs by acting like Quasimodo. Rich Little even shares some tips on how to do celebrity voices.

Order Rich Little’s book Little by Little: People I’ve Known and Been on Amazon or you can download the audio version for free with special offer for our listeners at www.audibletrial.com/kickassnews. My guest today is legendary comedian David Steinberg. David Steinberg will talk about how being part of the early days of Second City in Chicago, his 130 appearances on The Tonight Show (more than anyone other than Bob Hope) and his friendship with Johnny Carson, and how his appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour singlehandedly got the most popular show on television cancelled. Plus David Steinberg talks about directing Larry David on Curb Your Enthusiasm, being bestman at a gangster’s wedding, getting on Nixon’s enemies list, and why he says I definitely should NOT try my hand at stand-up comedy.

If you enjoyed my conversation with David Steinberg, I would highly recommend that you subscribe to his wonderful podcast The David Steinberg Podcast on iTunes. Order the documentary Quality Balls: The David Steinberg Story on Amazon, and follow David on Twitter at @david_steinberg or at www.thedavidsteinberg.com.

TV legend and witty raconteur Dick Cavett joins me for my 100th episode. Known as the “thinking man’s talk show host,” Dick Cavett shares stories from his 5 decades in television.  He discusses how he broke into show business, his long friendship with his personal idol Groucho Marx, his surprisingly chummy relationship with late-night rival Johnny Carson, his not so chummy relationship with the Nixon White House, and the time a guest actually died on air.  He reminisces about Muhammad Ali, Truman Capote, Jack Benny, Walter Winchell, Ed Sullivan and the night a young woman tried to seduce he and Marlon Brando into a threesome.

If you enjoyed my conversation with Dick Cavett, then order his book Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks  on Amazon or you can download the audio version of her book for free through a special trial offer just for our listeners at www.audibletrial.com/kickassnews.  You can follow Dick Cavett on Twitter at @TheDickCavett and visit his website at www.DickCavettShow.com for show clips, episode guides, and news from Dick Cavett.
